Question:

Field size in the Preakness?

I thought it would be nice to ask a serious question for this once, so we can start to get back on track and talk about horse racing (we can mourn Eight Belles and at the same time not say offensive things or bog down the board with calls to stop the sport).

After Big Brown's dominating win (and some other horses' tremendous losses, like Colonel John and Pyro), I think we can confirm that this is not a terrificly strong crop (I would go so far as saying that the filly field has more stand-outs than the colts). Big Brown looks to be the only solid horse coming out of the Derby. So how big do you think the Preakness field will be? Certainly some horses are tracking the Preakness after missing the Derby (like Rock Hard Ten in 2004), and horses like Denis of Cork will probably carry over. But I doubt that we'll have a full field in the Preakness. What do you think?

  1. Behindatthebar, El Gato Malo, Kentucky Bear, Tres Borrachos, Giant Moon, Stevil, Yankee Victor, and Big Brown from the looks of it.

  2. NO,HE CANNOT BE STOPPED.

  3. Well, I believe the full field for the Preakness is what... 14 horses I believe? Correct me if I'm wrong but, I think we'll probably have the same amount of horses like we did last year and the year before; nine.

And yes, I agree with you on the solid horse subject. Big Brown looks like a horse that will get the Crown this year, considering all the other horses are not a challenge for him.

Hopefully he will finally bring home the Crown!

  4. The full field size is 14 but it probably won't be full.  Along with the horses that ZE mentioned there might be one more....Icabad Crane's connections have been considering the Preakness since before the Derby.  He won the Tesio at Pimlico on April 19.
