Fielder-Cabrera combination works as Detroit Tigers edge New York Mets 7-6 – MLB Spring Training
Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder put up a heroic show as Detroit Tigers defeated New York Mets 7-6 in a thrilling contest at the Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida. The Tigers displayed their strong hitting abilities on Wednesday, March 14 in their
Grapefruit League clash of the 2012 Major League Baseball Spring Training Session.
For the first time this spring, Cabrera and Fielder combined to make a brilliant play as the Tigers secured a narrow win over the Mets to improve their win-loss record to 8-1. The Tigers have lost just one game at their home since the start of their Spring
Training campaign.
The American League Central title holders will be hoping to carry on their sensational form throughout to pick the best possible hitting lineup for regular season. Presence of Fielder, Cabrera, Ryan Raburn and Delmon Young can give the Tigers edge over any
other AL team.
"He hit behind (Ryan) Braun over in Milwaukee so he'll hit behind Cabrera," manager Jim Leyland said of Fielder. "We've got pretty good protection behind him in Delmon Young; he knocked in 100 runs the year before last (112 in 2010)."
"You can move Miggy (Cabrera) into the 3-hole and he has more at-bats per game and you can't pitch around him," Young said. "Victor (Martinez) did a great job hitting behind Miggy, but now you walk Miggy and you have a guy who has hit 50 home runs in his
career coming up behind him."
Young is one of the most exciting hitting talents in American League. His efforts during 2010 season when he batted in over 100 runs cannot be forgotten.
Fielder continued to fulfil his fans’ expectations as he drove Cabrera in twice in the game against the Mets. The left handed striker followed his first walk with a towering home run and he had a single in the fourth inning to help the Tigers gain psychological
advantage over their rivals.
Young also made useful contributions to earn a two run single after Fielder’s final hit. Tigers’ starter Max Scherzer allowed just one hit and two walks on his 65 pitch limit.
