Somerset stormed to a nine wicket win over http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 on Friday, June 3rd, 2011.
The hosts scored 163 runs in their innings, but the target was chased comfortably by the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Marcus-Trescothick-c1898 and Roelof van der Merwe.
Kent’s captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Robert-Key-c2349, decided to bat first after winning the toss. He expected a high scoring game, as the pitch was very good for batting, but the hosts got off to a disappointing start in their innings.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Martin-van-Jaarsveld-c74944 failed to make an impression in the match for Kent and got out cheaply for seven and five runs each in their respective innings.
The hosts were struggling at that stage with three wickets down for just 32 runs on the board, but Key and middle-order batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Darren-Ian-Stevens-c52453, batted with maturity, rescuing their team from trouble. The pair put together 80 runs for the fourth wicket partnership,
guiding their side’s total above 100.
The Kent captain got out after a solid knock of 43 runs from 39 balls, hitting three fours and one six in his innings. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Stevens-c91368 made most of the good batting conditions, scoring 68 runs off just 41 with the help of five fours and four thunderous sixes.
Apart from Key and Stevens, there were no batsmen in the home team’s innings to trouble the opposition bowlers and they managed 163 runs in the allotted 20 overs.
Off-spinner, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Cullum-Tredwell-c65571, was only the third player in the innings to reach double figures, scoring an unbeaten 10 runs from 11 balls.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Alfonso-Thomas-c991, who grabbed a couple of wickets in the match.
Somerset suffered an early blow when they came out to bat, as opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Peter-David-Trego-c81582 was unable to make an impact. He was dismissed after adding just six runs to the total from the same number of deliveries.
However, the visitors’ skipper, Trescothick, and Proteas all-rounder, van der Merwe, were in devastating form. They played fearless cricket and didn’t allow the bowlers to settle down.
Both players guided Somerset to victory in 17 overs with a superb partnership of 150 runs for the second wicket.
Van der Merwe top scored the innings with 89 runs from just 51 balls, smashing seven fours and six towering sixes whereas his skipper remained unbeaten on 64 off 47 deliveries.
The lone wicket to fall in the Somerset innings was taken by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Charl-Kenneth-Langeveldt-c49673.
