Fifth Annual Supergirl Jam series wraps up in Los Angeles
The fifth Annual Supergirl Jam series came to a close with the Skateboard Street, Snowboard Rail Jam and Am-Jam contest on Sunday, August 21, at the Venice Beach boardwalk in Los Angeles, California.
New York’s Alexis Sablone clinched top honours in the Skateboard Street contest, while Wrightwood’s Laurie Currier walked away with the Snowboard Rail Jam Title. Riverside-based Samarria Brevard emerged triumphant in the Am-Jam.
The Supergirl Jam series, which is an all-girl festival, had kicked off earlier this month with the 6-star Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Pro Junior surf competition in Oceanside. The past Sunday saw the event come to an exciting finish with
three contests.
The final day of the Supergirl Jam series kicked off with the Am-Jam contest, featuring extremely talented amateur skaters go head-to-head for top honours and a chance to compete against the pros in the Skateboard Street event.
Brevard came up with an extremely impressive performance to successfully overcome her rival, Chelsea Castro, in the Final and secure the highest spot on the podium. Both the finalists earned their place in the Skateboard Street contest to compete among the
ranks of pro skaters.
As the Am-Jam contest concluded, the huge crowd in attendance at the Venice Beach boardwalk turned their attention to the Snowboard Rail Jam contest. The event organisers had hauled 80,000 pounds of snow at the beach to create a 28-foot artificial mountain
for the snowboarding contest.
Despite the presence of defending champion Danyale Patterson in the contest line up, Currier managed to steal the show with her outstanding run, which featured an Ollie over the three-foot rail to a hard-way 180 to switch 50-50 to regular. The sensational
run earned Currier her third Supergirl Snowboard Rail Jam title.
Talking to a reporter after the contest, an ecstatic Currier said, “Having snowboarding on the beach makes this such a cool event and so different from every contest out there. It’s my fourth
Supergirl Jam. I’ve made the podium every time, and this one put me back on top in first place. The
Supergirl contest takes everything I love and puts it into one amazing event.”
The 20-year-old Patterson had to settle for runner-up place, while Desiree Melancon rounded out the podium by securing third position.
With the Snowboard Rail Jam contest coming to an exciting finish, the crowd’s attention was diverted to the final event of the day, the Skateboard Street, which featured top female skaters from all around the globe.
Sablone, defending Supergirl Skateboard Street champion and 2010 X Games gold medallist, landed an exceptional run to seal the fate of the contest in her favour. Her winning run included a kick-flip 50-50 on the hubba and a nollie heel-flip over the Euro
gap.
During the post-contest interview, Sablone said, “This contest is really important. It gives the girls an opportunity to get exposure by focusing on just them. It’s really cool. The course is always different and the beach provides a more relaxed atmosphere
for a contest. I look forward to it every year.”
Covina-based Lacey Baker finished in second place, while Amy Caron of Huntington Beach finished third to complete the podium.
The fifth Annual Supergirl Jam series turned out to be yet another successful celebration of the talent, skills and innovative potential possessed by female community in the action sports industry. The series not only invites the best female action sports
athletes from around the world, but also acts as an encouragement and inspiration for the new generation of female athletes.
