Fifth European Cadet Championship 2011 – Day Five – Fencing Update
Klagenfurt, Austria was the location for the fifth day of the Fifth European Cadet Championship 2011 on March 4 which included the Men’s sabre and Women’s epee team events.
Spain and Slovakia were the only two teams not get an automatic bye to the top 16. However, it was Spain that beat the Women’s team from Slovakia to take the 16th seed in the competition. In the Women’s epee team event, 17 nations took part with
each team having three active members and one substitute.
France beat the British fencers with a two-hit difference 45-43 to qualify into the top 8 position. The French fencers put in a tremendous performance as they managed to dominate the British.
The Italian, Hungarian, Polish and Romanian Women fencers dominated for most of the Championship and basically took over the advanced rounds with their brilliant performances.
To qualify into the top 4, Hungary put in a superb performance as they defeated the powerful Germans 45-44 as Poland beat Israel 45-41.
The Italian Women dominated Hungarian fencers 45-44 in the semi-final round as they would go on to face the Polish.
The Polish team was dominated by the Italians in the finals. Italy’s Men’s sabre team and Women’s epee team managed to maintain total dominance over their respective disciplines throughout the day.
A total of 56 fencers from 14 nations were represented in the Men’s sabre team event of the Championship. Both the Italian and Russian teams dominated for most of the day. Silver medal holder Luca Curatoli and bronze medalist Leonardo Affede made up the
Italian team that defeated the Russian team of Alexander Baranovsky the bronze medalist and Alexander Trushakov, a gold medal winner.
The bronze medal play-off was a fight between Germany and France. However, it was the French team of Tom Seitz and Mehdi Fabre that managed to overpower the strong German team with a score of 45-28. The French team put in a tremendous performance and completely
dominated the match-up.
March 5 marks the final day of the Fifth European Cadet Championship 2011, as the Men’s foil and Women’s sabre team events with close out the exciting tournament. It will be interesting to see what the final medal tabulations and which country will manage
to dominate in the closing day of the tournament. As the fourth and fifth day of the tournament has ended, there really have not been many surprises so far.
However, with another day to go, many of the teams will be looking to put in a good performance and represent their respective country on the medal tabulations. All eyes will be set on the final day as the fans anxiously await the results of the exciting
match-ups on the final day.
