Fifth European Cadet Championship 2011 – Day Four – Fencing Update
The fourth day events of the Fifth European Cadet Championship took place on March 3 in Klagenfurt, Austria. The day featured two individual events namely Men’s foil and Women’s sabre.
A total of 28 nations participated in the Men’s foil individual with the help of 85 fencers. These fencers were divided into 13 pools seven of which included 7 fencers each whereas the rest six consisting of 6 fencing individuals.
In Men’s foil individuals, the top position was clinched by Czech Republic national named Alexander Choupenitch that was quite unusual yet pleasant win by the fencer. The second position was taken up by a Russian named Ilya Degtyarev followed by a shared
bronze medal between the Hungarian Andras Nemeth and Italy’s Michele Del Macchia.
Apart from the position taking nations, the preliminary rounds were found conquered by the French and German fencers, making it up till the top 8 and top 16 respectively.
The gold medallist gave a record of twelve bouts of all levels of the event were undefeated followed by the deserving Hungarian silver-medal holder Ilya Degtyarev with losing just the final bout by three hits at a 15-12 score.
Again it was found that the Italy’s Men’s fencing could not reach up to the gold winning round, unlike their female counterparts who earned yet another golden win for their country on the same day.
In Women’s sabre, Italy’s Martina Criscio won the event title by defeating Hungarian Anna Marton with a three hit dominance 15-12 in the final bout. However, the third position was shared between Poland’s Angelika Wator and Kenza Boudad of France.
The Polish fencer had a head-to-head face-off with the title winner, as Martina lead herself into the next round by scoring the decider hit on Angelika, putting the score at 15-14.
Even though the German and Russian fencers were brilliant in the preliminary rounds of the event, they hardly made it to the top 8 and top 16 respectively where they were easily defeated.
Italy is found to be ruling the medal tally with a total of eleven medals up till now. Among these, four are gold, three are silver and the remaining four are bronze medals.
The day had historic importance for both Hungary and Czech Republic for their first gold win. Especially the Hungarian fencers were found back in the competition after a temporary disappearance from the top 3 chart.
The next day of the European Cadet Championship is to commence March 4 in which two team events shall be conducted for the day namely Women’s epee team and Men’s sabre team.
A total of two more days are left for the event to finalise that will give a clearer picture of who rules on the medal tally.
