Fifth European Cadet Championship 2011 – Day Two – Fencing Update
Klagenfurt, Austria saw day two of the Fifth European Cadet Championship held on March 1 featuring the two individual events of Men’s sabre and Women’s epee.
The Italian fencers dominated the Men’s sabre individuals, but were unable to get on the top spot and instead secured the second, third and ninth positions.
Russia had an amazing performance as they managed to secure the top position and the third and 14th slot. Germany put in a tremendous effort and advanced into the fifth, seventh and 11th positions.
A total of 24 nations took part in this event with the help of total 73 individual fencers for Men’s sabre. The top position was taken by Russia’s Alexander Trushakov who gave a record of 9-2 (win-loss) out of 11 bouts of the event. It was a very close win
for Trushakov against the Italian Luca Curatoli with a score of 15-13 in the conclusive bout. The third position was shared between Italy’s Leonardo Affede and Russia’s Alexander Baranovskiy.
The semi-finals were an easy win for both the finalists but hard competitive fights were to be found in the quarter-finals as Leonardo won by a single point (15-14) against Nicolai Zaporojcenco (Moldova) and Trushakov won against the German Frederik Koch
15-12.
The French fencers were dominant in the preliminary rounds until the top 32 as they were unable to make it into the top 16 round. The French fencers were disappointed with their weak performances in the tournament.
There were 92 female participants from 29 different nations that took part of the second event of the day, the Women’s epee individuals.
On comparison with the Italian male fencers, their female counterparts finally made it to the top seed of the event, winning the first gold for their country.
The outshining nations in the second event of the day were Germany, Italy and France that got dominated by Israel, securing four positions in the top ten namely third, sixth, eighth and ninth sequentially. Here a single female from Estonia named Katrina
Lehis displayed an outstanding performance, securing the silver medal for her country.
The final bout was an easy win for Italy’s Alberta Santuccio against the Estonia native Lehis with a score margin of 15-8.
Lehis had formerly shown a head-to-head fight against Coraline Vitalis (France) in the semi-final round with a single hit difference in score at 14-13, qualifying for the finals.
Israel’s Rachel Kanevsky lost in the semi-final bout against Santuccio at 9-15. She made it to the semi-final after a tough face off against her compatriot Nickol Tal E, winning the bout 15-13.
Among the lot of France epeeists, a single fencer made it to the top 8 named Kamila Strug but got trounced by Santuccio. Similarly, a German participant Florina Plachta emerged up to the top 8 but later got defeated by Lehis.
The next day of the European Cadet Championship is to commenced March 2 in which two team events shall be conducted for the day namely Women’s foil team and Men’s epee team.
