Fifth consecutive lay day called for Billabong Pro Tahiti – 2011 ASP World Tour
The fifth stop on the latest season of Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Billabong Pro Tahiti saw the event organisers announce yet another lay day on Thursday, August 25, keeping the competition on hold at Teahupo’o in Taiarapu, Tahiti,
for a fifth consecutive day.
The strong winds at the event site during the morning assessment compelled the event organisers to wait another day before giving the event a green signal
Talking to a reporter regarding the latest lay day called for the event, the ASP International Head Judge, Pritamo Ahrendt, said, “It looks like the winds are going to swing later than projected today and we won’t be commencing with Round 2 of competition.
We’re seeing the first signs of this new swell coming in and we expect to be all systems go for tomorrow morning.”
Billabong Pro Tahiti has only seen one day of competition so far, with the first round running on Saturday. Since then, the event has been put on hold as the event organisers await the arrival of the huge swell that has been forecast to start filling in
at Teahupo’o by late Thursday.
The anticipated swell is expected to be mammoth-sized and touch the 30-foot mark on its peak day; Saturday. For many surfers, this may be the biggest wave that they would feast their eyes on and surf, creating an air of excitement.
Australia’s Joel Parkinson, currently ranked No.1 on the ASP World Title Rankings, expressed his excitement over the approaching swell, saying, “Whether I'm surfing a heat or sitting in the channel watching guys tow-in, it's going to be awesome. The hype
is starting to get here. It's less than 24 hours out now and everyone is starting to get pretty pumped up. Bring it on. To see Teahupoo in all its glory is going to be amazing.”
The fans are expecting an electrifying contest between the world’s top surfers once they resume their quest for the event-title and continue their campaign for the ASP World Tour title.
When the competition resumes, French Jeremy Flores will be going head-to-head with Tahiti’s Heiarii Williams in the opening heat of Round 2.
