Question:

Fig tree has 2 trunks!?

i have a small fig tree (about 2 feet tall) that i planted not too long ago

but a while back a 2nd trunk came out and now the 2nd trunk is bigger than the first.

i know that 2 trunks will make less fruit for the tree so i am wondering if i should remove the trunk

also which trunk should i remove? the bigger one, or the main smaller one?

also how do i cut it?

just remove it from the bottom with a saw or something?

thanks

  1. It sounds as if you have a grafted tree.  A good fruit bearer is grafted to a strong root stock.  look to see if the second tree is coming out below the graft.  If so cut off the new trunk.  the new one coming from the root will not give you good fruit. It will only grow large.  It may be hard to stop the root stock from putting up new growth once it started.  If that continues you may need to replace the tree.
