Fight between Wladimir Klitschko and Derek Chisora cancelled – Boxing news
The twelve-round heavyweight championship fight between Wladimir Klitschko, the holder of Ring Magazine, IBF and WBO titles and Derek Chisora was officially scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at the SAP Arena in Mannheim, Germany. However,
Wladimir Klitschko has announced that he is withdrawing from his world title defence against Derek Chisora.
Wladimir Klitschko is the number three pound for pound boxer in the world by Boxrec and number seven pound-for-pound boxer in the world by Ring Magazine. On the other hand, the Zimbabwe-born British professional heavyweight boxer, Dereck Chisora is currently
the British heavyweight champion.
While confirming his withdrawal to the fight, Klitschko stated, “I am very sorry about cancelling the fight, especially for all the disappointed fans. I have already fought (in Mannheim) three times. I became world champion in this Arena. However, I am optimistic
that soon we will have an event in Mannheim.”
The fight between Derek Chisora and Wladimir Klitschko was firstly announced in a press conference in October 2010.
According to the BBC, a lengthy recovery from a stomach-muscle injury was given as the reason for Klitschko’s withdrawal. Klitschko’s physician confirmed that the champion was suffering from the abdominal injury since three months. He said he is not yet
fully recovered to carry on fighting and is unable to prepare properly to defend his World Boxing Federation titles on April 30. He further said it is difficult to predict a precise time when he will be perfectly all right. However, if he joins a training
camp the fight would be at stake.
The cancellation was made on December 8, 2010. However, it was interesting to hear from Klitschko’s Management Group just 24 hours after the cancellation that they are not in the favour of rescheduling. They have invited many possible competitors including
David Haye and the champion of two divisions, Tomasz Adamek.
However, English Boxing Promoter Frank Warren can enforce the contract depending on the clause that both the fighters have to give a new date of combat within 30 days. The fight should be decided to happen within 180 days of its cancellation. Warren said
that is why they were not taking any action but hopefully the fight will take place next year.
Responding to this Klitschko’s manager Boente claimed that they are allowed to change their decision as contract says in two cases. If it is impossible for Klitschko to fight because of injury, he can postpone it and is allowed to sign a contract with another
opponent within 30 days.
The claim was failed because their dealings with David Haye could not come to an end after a month and they had to reschedule it with Chisora.
The performance of the contest was almost impossible because of being extremely anticipated but now after a hard struggle of months between the two the fight is going to happen. Wladimir Klitschko will be defending his three titles against David Haye hopefully
in Europe. However, the prize-money would be divided on a 50:50 ratio.
