is such a thing possible? what about 4 jet engines???

what would the aircrafts abillities be with 1 or 2 extra engines on it?

for example if you had an f15 with 4 engines instead of 2 ?

  1. they have one or two to keep them aerodynamic adding more would burn more fuel and provably make the jet more unstable they would more likely make engines more powerful not add more engines

  2. There's a good reason in engineering terms for never adding a single rivet, bolt, or widget that is not absolutely necessary for a machine (including an airplane) to accomplish its intended task.

So why add enormous complexity in the form of engines and the associated systems when it's not needed?  If you're designing a bicycle, would you add a bathtub just because there's one lying around?  Boo!

Two engines represent healthy redundancy.  Four engine airliners or cargo planes have that many engines because the technology has not yet produced an engine that produces the required power to fly it with just two or one.  Fighters are not as heavy, and one or two engines will do.

  3. the vertical takeoff planes like Yak 141 and Yak 38 for instance have four and three engines, respectively. However two of them are just the lift substituting engines and are not operated enroute, just while performing the vertical takeoff or landing.

Generally speaking, the main reason for multiplying the engines is increasing thrust and the secondary is improving the redundance and flight safety in case of engine failure.

However the TWO seems to be the proper number, ballancing the weight and thrust increase.
