  1. Getting a private pilot certificate couldn't hurt.  Check out the Marines too, I heard they have guaranteed flight openings.  Do good in high school if you are still young and you will need some college to be an officer.  Only officers fly.  If you get accepted to a military academy then that is your college.

  2. No. Get good grades and apply to Annapolis. Yeah RTM, looks like he has a brain to me.

  3. why pay when you get free training.  Plus pilots are selected at early age.  Go directly to the Navy and get in the program there.

  4. Yes, it would be. Try to get into the Naval college in Annapolis, that would help.

Look at Airforce, for example, although you dont need to go to their Academy the vast majority of the people getting pilot slots do

not to mention it will help you get ready for military life.

  5. you have a brain

  6. Yes, it can.  I'm not sure what the USN requirement is, but for the USAF a Private Pilot's License (PPL) is almost a prerequisite.  The most important thing a PPL tells the selection board is, "this person has 'rated potential' i.e., a subjective assessment of your ability to finish the program, and you have some airmanship skills.  Since nearly all US military fixedwing aircraft fly by Instrument Flight Rules (IFR), you should utimately be at least working toward your instrument rating when you apply to maximize your chances.

However, advanced ratings like multiengine, commercial ATP are sometimes looked unfavorably, as you will have ingrained some civilian habits, that you will have to unlearn.  (Statistically, your advantages from civilian training disappear as the course goes on.)

The two other most important things are passing the Class I Flight Physical, and getting through Officer Training School (or ROTC).  I would recommend checking out ROTC programs at universities you're interested in, and flying in your own spare time.  Places like Embry-Riddle, and getting a degree in commercial aviation-don't really give you an edge over others; it's just how the programs are designed regardless of service.

  7. it will help to have a solid understanding of the basics of flight and aeronautics. You will have a leg up on the rest of your class.
