  1. They rarely if ever inflate.

But that shouldnt deter you from keeping these little "bumblebee's"

The way the buzz around the tank, it's great!

But they only eat live food, (and they need Snails to keep their beaks worn down)

And supposedly you can only keep them in a tank by themselves, 15 gallons (for one) at the least!

  2. Inflation is a sign of stress.  Trying to make it inflate would be like trying to make your dog bite you.  These are brackish fish, and if kept in freshwater their whole lives, will have to deal with numerous recuring infections (fungus and Ich are most common).  With a specific gravity between 1.005 and 1.008, they will be MUCH healthier and live their full lives.  Frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis, prawn, clam, mussel, etc.) are ideal, along with as many snails as you can find, but some may take flake or pelleted food.  I don't often recommend live food (especially feeders or blackworms) as they are notorious for carrying pathogens into the tank (also, Puffers would not normally eat fish).  These are aggressive fish, so small, slow-moving fish should be avoided, but fast, aggressive fish are equally poor choices, usually bullying the not-so-speedy Puffers.  They are EXTREMELY inelligent, so a very detailed environment is good to keep them from getting bored.  Driftwood, plants (Java Moss, Java Fern, Water Sprite, Cryptocoryne pontederiifolia, Anacharis, mangroves and other salt-tolerant plants), and rocks are all great choices of decor and will lend themselves to keeping the Puffer entertained.

  3. This type of 'puffer' does not generally inflate, and if it does it is not a good sign. If they inflate they are really stressed out and you should turn off your lights and hope that they deflate without getting air stuck in their swim bladder. This = death!
