Question:

Figure skating testing

Okay, in two weeks I'm testing for pre-preliminary freestyle and preliminary moves.

I don't have a practice dress.

Do you think it would be fine if I wore this dress that I have?

- It is purple and it is a tank top type one, one of the arms has a plastic strap, so it looks like you only have one strap.. but it has a band of sparkles.

Should I just wear a black shirt over it or something? I don't wanna be over dressed or under dressed for my test. My mom doesn't want to buy a dress just for this test either.

Oh and should I do my hair nicely, like in a bun with clips and stuff. Or can I just wear a regular ponytail?

  1. its just a test. and easy breezy test. i dont even wear make-up for tests.

but do wear that dress. its fine,

especially for freestyle because you dont really want to be wearing pants.

i always wear buns just because im really good at putting them up quickly and my hair is sort of uneven in a ponytail. but if your comfortable in a ponytail then go ahead.

you can wear a jacket and gloves for the moves test. because you can take them off halfway if you get hot.

i would go gloveless and jacketless for freestyle only because you cant take it off in the middle of your program and gloves make your hands look a little less stretched and poised than you think they look.

and dont worry. judges usually let some things slide when you are taking lower tests ;P

and for freestyle: this is a great time to be showy with your skating! you have simple jumps and simple spins. so you really just need to show them that you can skate well.

  2. Well, my advice would be to wear whatever is most comfortable for you. When I had my test for FS1, I was SO nervous. I think that if you're comfortable, you'll do better. For hair, just go with a ponytail. It'll be fine. The judges don't care about your outfit. They just want to see the elements. Hope this helps! Good luck!

  3. the dress isnt rly what the judges are paying attention to. but that dress sounds totaly fine. DONT wear a shirt over it. girls ussualy wear a competition dress not a practice dress so dont worry about being over dressed. the dress that u described sounds perfect

  4. My coach and those around this area say that it doesn't matter severely, but for Moves it's better to wear simple black dress, and for freestyle you wear your nicest, but relatively conservative competition dress.  Hair varies...it should just look neat and clean, pulled back somehow.  I personally wear makeup, but not excessive...

  5. no T-shirt , pony tale , look  the same as a compotion but with less make up

  6. It never hurts to look your best in any situation.  Worry more about your moves than what you'll be wearing.  The moves will be what is more important.

  7. Figure Skating testing used to be really dressy. Skaters used to poish their skates before going out on the ice and they would tuck in the laces and have their make up done so ever piece of glitter was in place. Now testing is much more relaxed. I am on juvenille moves so I have been through a fair amount of tests. Usually I just stick with whatever dress a have from a previous competition, etc. and then sometimes I throw a tight fitted jacket over it (like one of those skater sportwear jackets - mine is black). My hair is usually in a ponytail because i find that most comfortable. I say, comfort is key and dont worry just concentrate on the moves. The dress you described sound absoutely fine (sounds cute actually!).

Have a great time! Try not to worry to much! And GOOD LUCK!!!!!!! : )

  8. I prefer my students to wear their nicest practice dress or a simple competition dress.  I always say, "If you feel pretty, you skate pretty!"   Do not wear anything that is sloppy - a nice skating sweater (that does not cover your skirt or your hands) is a must.

  9. The dress you described sounds perfect! I would suggest doing your hair in a bun. I always do that because when i do my spins if my hair is in a ponytail it gets in my face. Try not to wory about it too much, and good luck!
