Fiji Rugby Union Chief Executive Keni Dakuidreketi quits his office - Rugby News
The Chief Executive of the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU), Keni Dakuidreketi, has announced his retirement on June 15. The spokesman for FRU confirmed the news of the CEO’s departure and said that the board received his resignation letter this morning and later
on it was acknowledged by the Chairman of Fiji Rugby Union, Colonel Mosese Tikoitoga.
Fiji Rugby Union is already in troubled waters regarding its team selection and travel sanctions imposed by New Zealand, has been handed with another headache. Keni Dakuidreketi has become the third Chief Executive from the different rugby playing countries
to be sacked or resign within a short time of less than a week.
Earlier, the Chief Executive of the Rugby Football Union, of England, John Steel was removed from his office whereas the head of Scotland Rugby Union Gordon McKie resigned yesterday, on June 14. The Chairman of the Fiji Rugby Union, Colonel Mosese Tikoitoga,
told the media that Keni Dakuidreketi has made the decision of his resignation independently and no pressure was involved to force him to exit.
Keni Dakuidreketi had a very short tenure with the FRU as he was given the responsibility of Chief Executive just 10 day before. He could not carry on with the management of his board for more than two weeks. It seem the Fiji Rugby Union is having a tough
time because of its military leadership, who took over from the civilian government back in 2006.
Talking about his resignation,  Keni Dakuidreketi said that, "Its been tough, there's no hiding behind that fact, but there have been rewards such as the 2005 sevens rugby World Cup victory, the 2005-06 IRB world sevens series win and of course the wonderful
performance at the 2007 Rugby World Cup.
He further said that, "Its been my privilege and honour to have served an organisation which affects the very heart of the nation and where each and every individual regardless of creed or colour has an opinion."
Fiji Rugby Union is expected to appoint the new Chief Executive of the board in a couple of days as there are less than three months left before the Rugby World Cup 2011.
