File Sharing between 2 PCs

HiI am looking to transfer some files from my Desktop to my Laptop using an Ethernet cable and both PCs are off the internet. both PCs have windows XP. How can I set the connection up.I have tried just connecting them with a cable and also the network setup wizzard
