  1. Windows Media Player 11 will play the following video file types;

    Windows Media file

    .wm and .asf

    Windows Media Video file

    .wmv

    Windows video file

    .avi (probably doesn't display images)

    Microsoft Recorded TV Show file

    .dvr-ms

    Movie file

    .mpeg, .mpg, .mpe, .m1v, .mp2, and .mpv2

Two ways around this problem is to download the codecs or download another media player, maybe RealPlayer, QuickTime or FLV.

    Hope this helps

  2. You need to add a codec to Windows Media Player in order for it to play .avi files

    http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/

  3. you need to download codecs.

    download the full version

  4. You can download and install codec pack or you can get your self another media player and some of them doesn't require codecs(VLC , KMPlayer) , here are few links , just select what suits you:

  5. It's most probably because you don't have the codecs.

Download Xvid from www.xvid.org. It should almost definately play them as most pirated movies use the Xvid codec. Don't worry, it's safe and free.

  6. avi files can play in Windows Media Player.

Here is a list of file types that can play in Windows Media Player http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316992

Daring to go a little off-topic, I use this to pay medias (plays most of them and easiest to install and free)
