Filing a lawsuit when a loved one is killed?

I can understand the grief when a loved one is killed. But, why do people file lawsuits in response? Money would be the last thing I'd think of. Why do they think money can replace their loved one? It seems like they're placing a monetary value on a human life. How can people who are grieving still end up being so greedy? Then they'll say, "Well, it's not about the money." Well, if that's true, then why aren't they giving the money to charity or refusing to accept it at all? Sounds contradictory to me.

  1. I understand how you feel about this.  In the other hand (i'm just trying to see all angles) I don't believe that the victims family are actually looking to get rich, but they do have a lot of depression or sadness to worry about for the rest of their lives and then again it all depends on how the person died (or murdered or whatever way) in which it could lead to PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) which can affect them in every second of the day on anything that can bring them memories.  So then a frest start at a new location, funeral expenses, therapy expenses, etc... they all add up...

  2. well, if they are not going to be punished...i would want them to pay somehow, even if it is money. it doesnt necessarily mean that money could ever amount to what happened or replace that person. Saying that, every situation is different.

  3. Sure some people only think about the money and are greedy,Sometimes suing whoever is responsible is the only punishment available. If you didnt do that these people just walk away scott free.

  4. Perhaps they had children together and had plans for the children that now without the others income, are impossible.

There are also funeral costs and maybe the surviving relatives want to make a fresh start somewhere new to rebuild their own lives.

  5. I agree with you as far as the money thing. I think people may sue to "teach" a lesson. Maybe they feel someone needs to pay for hurting them by taking away their loved one.
