Filing a police report?

How long do you have to file a police report/complaint for domestic violence? I still have the pictures of the incident and my son witnessed it but it's been two months since my husband abused me. At the protecton hearing, they issued that it was a finding of domestic violence and it was extended for two years. Although he denied it. But I am just wondering if I still need to file a complaint for a permanent record or wil they frown upon it because I waited until after the protection hearing. I don't want him arrested. I just think he needs to get help by going to anger management or domestic violence classes. I was told by a friend that I should have reported it the same night because now it's too late.

  1. filing a police report will only get him arrested it will not help him. if you want him to get help there are programs and organizations to help, but only if he wants it and admits he needs it. let me add that a police report will help to protect you or at least establish him as a suspect in the investigation of your murder . my advise get out of the house , pack your bags and run, find a new place to live far far away.

  2. In most states you will find a statue of limitations on every crime except murder. Try going online and finding the statue of limitations for your state. It should break down between misdemener and felony of the time to file charges. Having the proof you have is good though even without the charges being filed it still shows proof. Having someone you love arrested is very difficult, but your friend is right you should have reported it immediately. He does need help and it would be better for a Judge to order him to seek counseling than for you to ask him to. Remember the Judge is not intimidated by him but you are.

  3. If you don't want him arrested for domestic violence, don't file a police report.  When someone waits for a long period to file, many times the assumption is that it wasn't too bad or it would have been reported right away.  The fact that you have pictures and a protection order was issued, it becomes a matter of court records. If it happens again, report it right away and with it already being a matter of record, the court will decide whether to incarcerate him and/or order him to anger management.

  4. police reports are corrupted in all cases.and they stay in you records.
