I am a US citizen married to an Italian citizen. He lives all year round in Italy and I travel between the US and Italy. I need to file my taxes but it wants my husbands social security number and he does not have one. I am not filing jointly. How do I get around this? Thanks

  1. The IRS says:

If you file as married filing separately, you can use Form 1040A or Form 1040. Select this filing status by checking the box on line 3 of either form. You also must enter your spouse's full name in the space provided and must enter your spouse's SSN or ITIN in the space provided unless your spouse does not have and is not required to have an SSN or ITIN.

    See Publication 501.

  2. probably can't file online, have to mail paper return to avoid having to list ITIN or SSN for hubby;  I'd note that he is Italian citizen living in Italy with return
