Filing for Wic??

Moms/dads what was your experience like when you went to the office for the first time? How long did you wait? Did you bring your child(ren)? Was there a lot of paperwork to fill out? What kind of questions did they ask? Etc. Just curious. I need to go file soon but am not sure what to expect. My daughter is 9 1/2 months old and am worried about a long wait and her getting cranky...any stories would be great.

  1. I didn't have to wait very long, and YES you DO have to take your kids. Since WIC is actually FOR kids they have to measure and weight them. You also have to have the proof of your income and ID for your child, like a Birth certificate or their S.S card, medical coupon, etc.

I got lucky. I live in a small town and got an appointment within a couple of days. If they tell you there is a wait ask to be put on a waiting list for cancellations.

  2. It'll take a while, and unfortunetely, they will want her there to see.

To make it easier: Take a few snacks with you.  Call ahead and have an appointment.

Take any information they may need, which includes

    Her immunization

    Her social security card

Proof of income for you/ your spouse

proof of address (utility bill is sometimes necessary too.)

    Proof of rent/mortgage, etc.

Ask exactly what you'll need before you go, and schedule the appointment for her "good" time of day.

  3. yes the first time you go, you will be there for quite a while. probably 2 hrs or so, when I was still on WIC and I would just go for my vouchers it would take about 1 1/2 hours because of all the ppl that are there.

  4. I had to make an appointment and the first one they had was 6 weeks later, so you should call right away.

they checked my iron levels (pricked finger) and looked at my license, pregnancy confirmation paystubs and such.  It wasnt a long wait and didnt take very long either.  I got my vouchers the same day.  but like I said make your appointment now!  also I missed a certification appt and had to wait 6 weeks for another one as well, without vouchers.

  5. EDIT.  At first I misred.  I thought you said 9 1/2 years.  LOL

You need to make an appointment.  Bring the immunizations, proof of address, pay stubs, ID, and I think her birth certificate.  Why wait?  If you need it get it ASAP.  Besides some offices take weeks to get you an appointment.

Some offices are a long wait, while others aren't.  If you call for an appointment at one WIC office and you cant get in for weeks, then call another office nearby.  You do need to bring your child.  There really isnt a lot of paperwork, I think one easy form.

  6. make an appointment if your office allows it....ours, appointments are mandatory.....we waited about 30 minutes, but it is a smaller office/area.

  7. The first time you go they will take your name and then they will give you an appointment date for the actual filing of the papers they will also give you something to fill out and a paper that lets you know what you need to take. When you have your appointment make sure you have all your papers ready because if you are missing something it will be a waste. I always take pretty much everything they ask for. Then it might take a little or long while after they get your paper work it should take about 15 to 20 minutes. Then you go and file the papers and talk to someone there about all that stuff. They will check your daughters weight, height, and prick her finger  for some tests in iron. This should all take about 15 minutes. Depending on the line. Then they will take you to a nutritionist who will tell you what and how your child is supposed to be eating which takes about 10 to 15 minutes too and then you will get your vouchers.
