Filip Peliwo downs Yoshihito Nishioka to reach round three – Boys’ Singles French Open 2012
Seeded fifth in the tournament, Filip Peliwo got the better of the Japanese rising star, Yoshihito Nishioka, in straight sets at the Boys’ Singles Roland Garros 2012 on Tuesday. He juggled up a 7-6(4), 6-4 victory against the Japanese youngster to charge
into the pre-quarters at this second of the four Grand Slam event taking place in Paris, France.
The Canadian seed showed brilliant tennis to outsmart Nishioka after warding off early resistance. After earning this success in one hour and 41 minutes, Peliwo comfortably powered into the round of 16 at this major clay court event.
Peliwo made a slow start and suffered the first blow in the second game to fall at 0-2. Despite recovering in the very next game, he lost his serve once more and went 1-4 down. However, the Canadian stayed focused and not only snatched his break back in
the seventh game but exchanged another serve break to enforce a tie-breaker. He edged past his rival in it and clinched the opener with a 7-6(4) score line.
Ranked 572nd in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings, Peliwo lost his path again towards the second set. After flinging away his serve in the opening game, he trailed at 0-2. However, the Canadian
dug his way back in the game and levelled the scores at 3-3. He held remaining serves with poise and availed another break chance in the last game to pluck the set with a 6-4 win.
All in all, Peliwo jolted down a poor first serve share of 46 per cent as compared to his rival’s 51 per cent but impressively clicked 22 out of 33 points on it. He spilled more unforced errors but smashed four winners to prevail.
Up next for Peliwo is the Brazilian contender, Thiago Monteiro, who tumbled over Australia’s Johan Thompson in straight sets to set up this battle.
The sixth seed, Kimmer Coppejans of Belgian, rallied past Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in a three set-thriller to accompany Peliwo. He lost his serve five times but capitalised on six out of 15 break opportunities to formulate a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 victory.
