Filip Peliwo stuns Luke Saville to conquer the Boy’s Singles title – Wimbledon Championships 2012
Canadian rising youngster, Filip Peliwo, upset the defending champion, Luke Saville, in straight sets at the Wimbledon Championships 2012 on Sunday. He clobbered a 7-5, 6-4 victory against the top seeded Aussie to capture the Boy’s Singles title at this
third of the four Grand Slam events held in London, England.
Seeded fourth in the tournament, Peliwo displayed top notch performance to shock the Australian youngster and conquered the Boys’ Singles event at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. After stealing the show in almost one and a half hour-long marathon,
the Canadian not only avenged his defeat at the title-round of Australian Open earlier this season but also became the second Canadian to clinch title at this prestigious grass court event.
“I’ve heard around the ITF Tour, even the Pro Tour a little bit, that guys know that I fight no matter how far down I am. It's really worked for me in many situations,” Peliwo stated in a post-match press conference. ”Honestly, even if I don't believe I'm
going to win the match, I'm going to give my absolute best to win every point, one point at a time. In the last few matches it went my way...all I can do is go out and do my best no matter what the score and hope for a win.”
The 18-year-old made a sloppy start at this Grand Slam event and suffered the first blow in the sixth game to fall at 2-5. However, he made a spectacular comeback and went on a five-game tear, subsequently carving out the opener with a 7-5 success.
The defending champion re-kindled his spark at the start of the follow-up set and quickly leaped to a 3-1 lead with a single break of serve.
However, the in-form Peliwo on the other side of net quickly sought his rhythm again and recovered in the very next game. He then stayed focused and cashed in another break chance in the seventh game, eventually sealing the set by winning six games to four.
All in all, the booming Canadian youngster showed amazing skills and abilities throughout the battle. He was a break down in both sets and fought back brilliantly to conquer the match. Peliwo clobbered a lower first serve share of 52 per cent as opposed
to his rival’s 60 per cent but tremendously marked 24 out of 33 points on it. He also fired five aces and capitalised on four out of 11 break chances to earn the spotlight.
