Filip Peliwo tops Liam Broady to capture Boys’ Singles title – US Open 2012
Second seed, Filip Peliwo, got the better of the British starlet, Liam Broady, in a three-set thriller at the Boys’ Singles event of US Open 2012 on Sunday. He summed up a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 victory against his fellow 18-year-old to capture his second Grand Slam
title in Corona Park in New York City, United States.
The Canadian teenager showed superb skills to outmuscle Broady in their first encounter. After stealing the show in 145 minutes, Peliwo capped his junior career just like Pete Sampras did. He secured a title-round berth at all four Grand Slam events and
entered Flushing Meadows after conquering the Wimbledon Championships.
"It's an honour to win here," Peliwo said after the match. "This is the best way for me to finish my junior career. I wanted to do it like Pete Sampras did, so it's nice to finish off like my idol."
Peliwo made quick in-roads after entering the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. He reeled off opening three games in a row before Broady could snatch a break back. The Canadian broke Broady’s serve once again and eventually sealed the opener
by winning six games to two.
The British rising star rebounded in the following set. He suffered the first blow in the third game but went on a five-game tear after that. Broady capitalised on three out of four break chances to pull out the equaliser with a 6-2 score line.
The booming Canadian re-gained his strength in the final set. He got the coveted break in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead. Regardless of losing his edge in the very next game, Peliwo got the breakthrough in the 11th game and clicked the decider
with a 7-5 win.
Peliwo is looking forward to strengthen up and improve his game.
"It's definitely a huge challenge. I have seen a lot of juniors before that have had success at this level and never really translated into the pro circuit. So it's definitely looking good for me, but there are no guarantees. I'm just going to have to keep
working hard and giving my best every day to develop my game as much as possible."
The Canadian rising star will now play at future and challenger events.
