Filipe Toledo and Beyrick De Vries dominant in Round 3 of Billabong ASP World Junior Championships
Brazil’s Filipe Toledo and South Africa’s Beyrick De Vries put on solid performances in their respective Round 3 heats of the Billabong Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Junior Championships that went down at the iconic Burleigh Heads in Gold
Coast, Australia, on Thursday, January 26.
With his win in the 11th heat, Toledo confirmed his place in the fourth round of the competition while removing South Africa’s Dylan Lightfoot from the contention for the event title in the process.
The 12th heat saw America’s Andrew Doheny surrendering victory to De Vries after putting up a determined fight. As a result, he was forced to make an exit from the competition, while sending the latter into the next round.
After making a solid impact on the opening day of Billabong ASP World Junior Championships, Toledo continued to exhibit a deadly form in the latest round of the competition.
Battling against Lightfoot for the Round 4 spot, the Brazilian stole the show with his aerials. In the opening minutes of the heat, he unloaded a string of grabs and rotations to post an 8.43 on the score-board and immediately followed it up with an even
more sensational wave, compelling the judges to give him an 8.77 for the effort.
Lightfoot, on the other hand, failed to read the conditions properly and offered a rather lacklustre challenge to his rival, failing to trouble the Brazilian at any point. Scoring a 3.67 and 5.00 off his best-two waves, the South African surfer finished
with a heat-total of 8.67 points As a result, he was forced to watch Toledo walk away with a comprehensive victory.
“I just got this Firewire board the other day and it's so good,” Toledo said. “I'm just going to take this event step by step, I've got lots of support from friends and family and I just want to thank them and try to keep it going.”
The next heat saw De Vries and Doheny engage in an intense bout for the coveted Round 4 spot. The South Africa-based De Vries opened his account with an impressive 7.33-point wave and soon added a 6.67 to his account, finishing with a resultant heat-total
of 14.00 points.
Doheny got off to a slow start, scoring a 4.67 off his first business-wave, but showed much more determination on his second business-wave to add an additional 7.43 points to his account. However, the effort failed to bring him a desirable result as he finished
in a 1.90-point deficit, consequently surrendering victory to De Vries.
