Filipe Toledo and Nathan Carvalho qualify for Billabong ASP World Junior Championships Semi-finals
Brazil’s Filipe Toledo prevailed over Australia’s Garrett Parkes in the third Quarter-final, while Hawaii’s Nathan Carvalho took the better of Australia’s Dean Bowen in the fourth Quarter-final of Billabong Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World
Junior Championships that went down at the world-renowned Burleigh Heads in Gold Coast, Australia, on Saturday, January 28.
The successful result in the Quarter-finals carried Toledo and Carvalho into the Semi-finals, while Parkes and Bowen were forced to make a premature exit from the competition.
The latest day of the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships continued to deliver a heavy dose of exciting surfing action as the surfers found themselves battling against each other as well as Mother Nature to remain in contention for the event title.
Determined to keep their chances of clinching the ASP World Junior Title alive, both Toledo and Parkes were desperate to survive their Quarter-final face-off.
As the battle for the coveted Semi-final slot got underway, Parkes took an early advantage by scoring a 6.27 off his first business-wave. As the heat reached the middle stage, the Australian added another 8.17 points to his account, thus moving to a heat-total
of 14.44 points.
The score was nothing short of intimidating due to the stormy seas and tricky two-to-three foot waves on offer at Burleigh Heads. However, Toledo neither had any intention of letting the demanding conditions get the better of him, nor did he plan on letting
Parkes’ nerve-racking heat-total put him under immense pressure.
The Brazilian surfer went through a series of average wave-scores before posting a 6.47 on the score-board to get back into business. With the pressure mounting with each passing minute, Toledo became increasingly desperate to find a good score. His determination
eventually led him to go all out on his final wave of the heat. The effort turned out to be a show-stealer, earning him 9.27 points and consequently putting him ahead of his rival with a heat-total of 15.74 points.
After the third Quarter-final concluded, Carvalho and Bowen found themselves competing against each other for the last remaining spot in the Semi-finals.
Both the surfers got off to a slow start, though Bowen eventually managed to post a 4.83 on the score-board to take the lead. He immediately followed it up with a 4.77-point wave to take his heat-total to 9.60 points.
Carvalho remained persistent throughout the course of the heat and eventually managed to earn a 5.83 and 6.30 off his final two waves of the heat to finish with a heat-total of 12.13 points, thus sealing the fate of the battle in his favour.
The Billabong ASP World Junior Championships Gold Coast in the third and final event of ASP World Junior Tour and will determine the men’s and women’s 2011 ASP World Junior Champion.
