Filipino Brian Viloria retains WBO flyweight title against Mexican Omar Nino Romero – Boxing News
Brian Viloria, the current WBO flyweight champion, defied all odds and grabbed an impressive rather easy ninth-round technical knockout win over Omar Nino Romero, the former WBC light flyweight champion, in a 12-round bout held on May 13, 2012.
The hefty Sunday night showdown was organised and promoted by Fernando Beltran of Promociones Zanfer, Elmer T. Anuran of Saved by the Bell Promotions, Paolo Diaz of Elite Promotions, Naris Singwangcha of Singwangcha Promotions and Jason O. Soong of Planet
Jupiter Promotions.
The above duo headlined the pay-per-view whereas the bout between Robert Udtuhan and Alvin Makiling for the WBO Asia Pacific bantamweight title co-headlined the event. The ring for the extravaganza was set up at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City, Metro Manila,
Philippines.
Brian, 31, was entering in his career’s 36th bout and boasted 30 wins. He has lost just three bouts and has nailed 17 of his total opponents by knockout. Viloria, also known as the ‘Hawaiian Punch’, grabbed his WBO title in a bout with Julio Cesar Miranda
and since then this was the second time that the Filipino proud was defending his title.
His Sunday night opponent, Omar though has a slight upper edge as far as the experience is concerned yet possessed some technical disadvantages. The Mexican proud Romero was in his 39th bout and boasted 31 wins with just 13 via knockout.
He has lost four bouts and is currently undergoing a bit declining trend. The 36-year-old Omar, also known as the ‘Giant Killer’, recently lost his WBC light flyweight title to Gilberto Keb Baas and after that collected just one win over rookie Javier Romano.
The battle was a toe-to-toe one since both men were of almost equal calibre and possessed unique qualities which differentiated them from each other. During the whole bout, Brian authoritatively led the whole bout and rattled Omar after frequent intervals.
During the fourth and fifth round Viloria flattened Omar twice and after the third time ninth round knockout punch, the referee finally halted the bout at two minutes and seven seconds declaring Brian victorious.
After the bout, Viloria commented, “I felt like I was in control of the fight. I don’t think I felt like I was out of control at any point of time. Even the first two rounds which started out pretty slow for me, I felt like I just needed to set myself and
get the pace… and just to feel out my opponent a lot more. After the first two rounds I just started to pick it up.”
With this win Brian has collected his 31st victory and Omar has received his career’s fifth loss. Viloria is now eyeballing Hernan Marquez, the current WBA flyweight champion and will most probably meet him at the end of this year.
