  1. The Phillippines are a group of islands in the Pacific.

    Clearly, they're European.

  2. Actually, the Phillipine Islands have been controlled over time by the Spanish, French and Asians.  Their language is a blend of these influences.  Their physical make-up is a blend of the same. It might therefore be said that the people of the islands are Euro-Asian. But since they have come together and created their own society within the Pacific Islands, they are Pacific Islander.  They have created their own identity and their own place in the world.  Something to be proud of.

  3. Are you referring to culture, geography, or ethnicity?

Culturally, Filipinos are very Hispanic in a sense that we were colonized by Spain for hundreds of years.

The Philippines itself is an island in the Pacific so, haha.

Ethnically, Filipinos are composed of a mix of different "races" but predominantly of Indo-Malay (Pacific Islander) lineage.

  4. I've answered this question a couple times, because as Interesting as I find it, most people are wrong.

Filipinos are Asian and NOT Pacific Islanders. Although The Philippines are located within the Pacific Ocean, it's considered part of Southeast Asia.

The term Pacific Islanders are for the areas made up of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia--Note that the Philippines are NOT classified in those areas.

So, it would be incorrect to call them Pacific Islanders..

and realize, even New Zealand Maoris, who are Polynesian, do not classify themselves as Pacific Islanders.

  5. Asian

  6. Hey there,

I am so glad you asked this question. Some very good answers here. Me and hubby just had this conversation a few weeks ago.

I commented that I thought the same as Eli did and he made me feel almost racist. I think Eli put it perfectly. Perspective is a wonderful thing.
