Filippo Inzaghi engraves his name in record books
After scoring a brace in the UEFA Champions League clash against Real Madrid on Wednesday night, AC Milan’s striker Filippo Inzaghi has carved his name into the record books.
With 60 minutes of the game played and his side a goal down, Inzaghi came on as a substitute for Ronaldinho. The veteran striker had the tough task of rescuing the game for Milan, and he did not disappoint. On the 68th minute he seized on a spill
by Iker Casillas to bring the game level, before scoring a 2nd to turn the tie around in Milan’s favour.
Although, Madrid grabbed an equalizer at the death to draw the match, Inzaghi was pleased with his performance. By scoring a double, the 37 year old not only helped the Rossoneri to salvaged a point, but also broke 3 records in one night.
Top scorer in European club competitions
Pippo’s 2nd goal of the night was his 70th in European club competitions and he broke the current record of 69 continental goals, set by Raul Gonzalez and Gerd Muller.
6th on AC Milan’s all-time top-scorers chart
Filippo overcame Dutch legend Marco van Basten (124 goals) to stand 6th in Milan’s all-time top scorers chart.
Leading marksman for Milan in Europe
Inzaghi scored for the 40th time for Milan in European competitions, beating his former team mate Andriy Shevchenko’s 38 goal record.
On achieving the historic milestones, the Italian said, “I give credit to the supporters for the records. Their cheering gave me an incredible lift when I stood up from the bench. When I'm at the San Siro, all the joyful moments I've spent wearing the Milan
shirt come to my mind.I knew I was ready to play, I feel in great shape, but in the end the result left me a bit disappointed, even though I scored twice from two shots”.
After the match, former FC Iternazionale manager Jose Mourinho also congratulated Inzaghi, and Milan’s no.9 was appreciative of the Portuguese’s gesture.
He commented, “I know the respect Mourinho has for me. Last year when he was at Inter he surprised me by waiting outside the dressing room to ask for my shirt. Coming from him that was a great honour, and the fact he hugged me after tonight's game made me
very happy”.
