Filippo Inzaghi out for the remainder of the season with knee injury
Only one week after coming off the bench to score two goals in the Champions League against Real Madrid in what he described as the best game of his career, AC Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi's season could be over.
Milan's 3-1 win over Palermo on Wednesday 10 November proved to be costly as both Inzaghi and Brazilian Alexandre Pato picked up injuries during the match.
Pato is expected to miss out on the derby match between AC and Inter slated to take place on Sunday, but the injury which is of far greater concern is that received by Inzaghi, which has turned out to be worse than originally thought.
Il Corriere dello Sport has reported that Inzaghi has damaged his meniscus and has picked up an additional lesion to his cruciate ligament.
The club has officially confirmed that Inzaghi will need to have surgery to repair the knee, and issued a statement saying, "A.C Milan communicates that Filippo Inzaghi had scans on Thursday and it showed a lesion
of his anterior cruciate ligament in the left knee. After a consultation with doctor Piero Volpi, we confirm there will be surgical treatment".
The 37-year-old Inzaghi has had a stunning playing career for both club and country and it is uncertain what the injury will mean for Inzaghi's future. Inzaghi has had his share of knee and ankle problems over the years, but that hasn't stopped him
from appearing in over 450 Serie A games and scoring close to 200 goals. Inzaghi is also tied with with long-time Real Madrid star Raul (now with Schalke) for the record for goals in European competitions with 70.
Inzaghi is one of Italy's most decorated strikers scoring 25 international goals and winning the World Cup with Italy in 2006.
Inzaghi had had two goals in five matches so far this season.
