Filippo Volandri, Benoit Parire make it to the quarterfinal – ATP ORBETELLO Challenger 2011
Number one seed Filippo Volandri battled past qualifier David Goffin 6-3, 7-5 on Wednesday to book a quarterfinal berth at the 2011 ATP ORBETELLO Challenger Series here in Orbetello, Italy.
The Italian tennis pro made a bright start to the match as he broke the Belgian in the very first game to boost his confidence levels. Goffin was also up for the challenge as he broke straight back to stay in the set. The players
exchanged several serve breaks in the opening set as the set entered a very exciting stage with the Volandri leading the game score 4-4.
The Italian had his third break chance in eight game of the set which he converted with three straight points to take crucial 5-3 lead. Holding on to his next service game without any trouble what so ever, he claimed the opener.
Goffin raised the level of his game and put up a much better show in the following set. Breaking the serve early, he took a healthy 4-2 lead. However from there on Volandri did not allow his opponent to breath as he broke straight
back to stay in the set. Serving at 5-6 down in the set, the Belgian had a tricky job of holding on to his service game. However he fell under pressure and gifted a couple of points to let the challenger complete his victory in straight sets.
Volandri excellent 71 per cent first serve combined with his great defensive skills proved to be the decisive factor in his victory. With his powerful and well directed serves, he was able to take control of the points right from
the start and then placed his great forehand and backhand winners all over the court. He will be feeling very happy with the way he has been hitting the tennis ball in his last two matches at the tournament.
However consistency is going to be the key as he takes on other top seeded players at the Association of Tennis Professionals tournament.
In another match, number seven seed Benoit Paire of France eased past 7-6 (1), 6-2 local wild card Matteo Tresvian to book his place in the quarterfinal.
Tresvian looked completely in control of his game play as the match started. He executed his shots perfection and created all sorts of problems for an opponent ranked much higher than him.
After both players broke each other once, the set went into a tie-breaker. Under pressure, the Italian managed to win only one point in the tie-breaker to let Paire take the set score lead 1-0. Paire continued to display some high
quality tennis in the second set as well and broke the serve twice to ensure a straight sets victory.
