Filippo Volandri crushes Andre Begemann to cruise into quarters – AON Open 2012 CH
Fourth seed, Filippo Volandri, devastated the German qualifier, Andre Begemann, with a bagel at the US Open 2012 on Thursday. He penned down a 6-3, 6-0 success against the 28-year-old to breeze into the quarter-finals at this outdoor clay court tournament taking place from 3rd to 9th September in Genoa, Italy.
The Italian seed showed brilliant skills to outrun Begemann in their first encounter. After bagging the match in one hour and 13 minutes, Volandri comfortably secured a spot in the final eight at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event.
The 31-year-old powerfully entered the Italian dirt. He drew the first blood in the third game to go 2-1 up. Volandri squandered his edge in the very next game but broke again to jump to a 4-2 lead. He held his remaining serves with conviction and capitalised on another break chance to clinch the opener with a 6-3 score line. The Italian warded off two out of three breakpoints he came across and availed three out of five break chances.
Ranked 72nd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Volandri went out of control in the following set. He blasted powerful groundstrokes to reel off six games in a row. The Italian swiped his entire serves without encountering any hindrance and cashed in three out of 12 break chances to pull out the set with a bagel.
The local veteran manifested a higher first serve share of 70 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 43 per cent and brilliantly marked 22 out of 30 points on it. He also took full advantage of six double faults the German spilled and finished the deal with 67 points.
Up next for Volandri is the Spanish challenger, Sergio Gutierrez-Ferrol, who rallied past Portugal’s Frederico Gil in three sets to progress.
The seventh seed, Albert Montanes, battled past Italy’s Gianluca Naso in a three-set mouth-watering match to secure a place in the last eight. He lost his serve twice but cashed in half of the six break chances to manipulate a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 score line in two hours and 14 minutes.
