Filippo Volandri dismisses Peter Luczak in straight sets at the 2011 Monte Carlo Masters
Italian tennis player Filippo Volandri cleared the final round of the qualifying singles at the 2011 Monte Carlo Masters just minutes ago, shattering Australian pro Peter Luczak’s hopes of an appearance in the main draw. Volandri
took just under one hour and twenty minutes to defeat Luczak 6-4, 6-1.
Volandri is currently ranked World Number 75, and is 29 years older. He is one of the most experience tennis players on the Association of Tennis Professionals, having joined the tour in 1997. The Italian player has won two career
titles so far. He defeated Kazakhstan’s Yuri Schukin in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 in the first round of the qualifying singles at this event yesterday. It was an easy victory for the player, who has realized his true potential a bit too late in his pro career.
Peter Luczak, on the other hand, is ranked World Number 167 at the age of 31. He is a right handed player, and has only won a single match so far in 2011. The player has been on tour since 2000, and is yet to win a career title.
He ousted fourteenth seed Denis Gremelmayr of Germany in straight sets 7-5, 6-1 at the tournament in the first round of the qualifying singles.
Volandri defeated Luczak quite easily, breaking the player four times and winning 62 percent of his first serve points during the match. He defended himself against one six break points, and eventually took a whopping 60 per cent
of the total points in the match to proceed to the main draw at Monte Carlo. The two players had never competed against each other before.
Filippo Volandri will now participate in the main draw of the 2011 ATP World Tour Masters, which is considered one of the most prestigious tournaments on the ATP World Tour. This year, it features players such as Roger Federer,
Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray. Volandri is one of the lower-ranked players at the event, although he may surprise spectators with his performance.
