Filippo Volandri trashes Boris Pashanski in second round – Tennislife Cup 2011 CH
Fourth seeded Italian Filippo Volandri eased past Boris Pashanski of Serbia and registered a 6-4, 6-3 victory at the Tennislife Cup 2011, a Challenger Tour event held at the Greenpark Posillipo from September 24th
to October 2nd in Napoli, Italy. After earning this achievement, he advanced into the final eight on Thursday.
A local tennis hero, Volandri, ranked 70thin the South African Airways ATP World Tour rankings, gunned down Pashanski, positioned 231 spots below him, in straight sets on their third meeting. Facing each other after
five years, the Italian maintained his composure to advance into the final eight.
Volandri confidently marched into the red clays and held his opening serve. He took the first blood in the second game to extend the lead. Despite losing his edge in the seventh game, he broke the Serbian’s serve again in the last
game to seal the opening set by winning six games to four.
The Italian clobbered a higher first serve share of 70 percent as compared to the Serb’s 63 percent and registered an acceptable 52 percent win on it. He saved one out of two breakpoints faced and capitalised on two out of six
breakpoint opportunities to his advantage.
The seed kept momentum into the final set and bagged his serves till he broke Pashanski’s serve in the sixth game. Regardless of losing his serve in the proceeding game, Volandri broke again in the proceeding game to eventually
seal the set with a 6-3 win.
He saved three out of four breakpoints came across and cashed in on both breakpoint chances to his advantage. Furthermore, the Italian manipulated a lower first serve share of 83 percent as opposed to Serb’s 86 percent but registered
an impressive 62 percent win on it.
Next up for the seeded Italian is the Argentinean Leonardo Mayer who stunned seventh seeded French Stephane Robert in straight set to set-up this meeting.
Mayer took one hour and fifteen minutes to crush the seed in straight sets on their second meeting. He took revenge for his loss at Eastbourne last year but also secured a quarter-final spot.
Ranked 117thin the ATP rankings, Mayer took the first blood in the third game to take the lead. He gifted away his serve in the proceeding game but broke again in the fifth game to eventually bag the opener with a 6-4
score line.
The Argentinean got the desiderated break in the opening game of the final set and after reeling off entire serves, he broke again in the last game to clinch the set with a 6-3 win.
