Filippo Volandri trounces Andreas Haider-Maurer in the semi-finals of 2011 Barletta Open
World number 80 Filippo Volandri proved too good for Andreas Haider-Maurer as he knocked him out in straight sets at the 2011 Barletta Open on Saturday. Given their first meeting on courts, Volandri was quite commanding from the
opening to the final set and didn’t permit his Austrian contender to get a hold of the game. The Italian, who was determined wa victorious with a 6-4, 6-3 score-line.
In the opening set, Volandri delivered 72 per cent of his first serves correctly, but only managed to carry off 67 per cent of points on them. Haider-Maurer’s serves was not that good as he only kept in 39 per cent of his first
serves, winning 50 per cent on conversion. Volandri’s had a better second serve percentage of 43 per cent as opposed to his 42 per cent which helped him a lot to hold off a comeback from him. Volandri took a chance on favorable circumstances to clinch the
first set with 6-4 set score.
After Haider-Maurer’s unfortunate breakdown in the first set, he started the second set in order to get better stats; he delivered 61 per cent serves converting 59 per cent of points on the first serves and only 27 per cent on
the second serves. Volandri, on the other hand, landed in with 80 per cent of first serves correctly, winning 60 per cent of points on them. Volandri crafted one break opportunity but couldn’t convert it. The final set ended 6-3, giving Volandri an easy triumph.
Volandri has played eight matches in the year so far and had a 20 per cent winning rate on them. The most recent match he lost was at the second round of Abierto Mexicano Telcel where he was defeated by Nicolas Almagro of Spain
in straight sets. He hasn't won any title in the season so far and is trying his best to get one. His most notable performance at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 came in 2007 at the ATP Masters series Rome, where he moved it into the semifinals ousting Teymuraz
Gabashvili, Richard Gasquet, Roger Federer and Tomas Berdych. In the finals, he lost to Fernando Gonzalez of Chile in straight sets in just a time span of sixty seven minutes. This was his most considerable achievement at any ATP world tour series throughout
his tennis career.
Volandri will meet a wild card entrant Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia in the finals of the tournament. This will be the first meeting between them. Players are holding the aces right from the beginning of tournament and at the moment,
it will be difficult to predict that who will get it down to a fine art.
