I have a concrete block foundation with a crack that is about 10 feet long and runs vertically and is about a 1/4 inch wide. What do I use to fill this? Also should I be concered with smaller hairline cracks that were cause by drilling? Or should I seal those too?

  1. If it is a block foundation and a vertical crack is running through both bond joints and block faces you might have an issue with subgrade that needs to be looked at by a professional. It could just be the building settling or small seismic shifting. You'll want to keep your eye on it to make sure your foundation isn't compromised. But for the issue at hand to fill the crack you'll want to use a high performance joint sealant such as Sikaflex 15-M or Sonneborn Sonolastic 150 which are specifically for concrete and masonry. These will give you a waterproof seal that is flexible in case the foundation continues to settle or shift.

  2. if its a dry area, use regular mortar mix and pack it into the crack- if its a wet area, use hydraulic cement- it expands as it cures.

  3. You have settling going on.  You can fill them with a concrete patch.  It's made primarily for cracks in driveways.

    The cracks will widen eventually.

  4. at your local home improvement store like Menards for instance i've seen a concrete crack sealant that costs around $5.00, its located near the paint dept.
