My dentist said the other day that she is giving me two small fillings, so small that she isn't going to bother with pain relief? Is my dentist cruel or is this normal?

  1.    Your dentist is not cruel.  Some cavities are not very deep. This is incipient decay.  When it has not yet penetrated the deep layers of the tooth no pain is felt.  Your tooth consists of many layers.  The first 1.2mm  is enamel. This is composed primarily of inorganic components such as calcium crystals,  no pain whatsoever is felt when this layer is drilled.  The second layer is called dentin.  This layer consists of organic materials and is rich in nerve endings.  If there is DEEP decay in this layer you will feel pain.  But don't worry.  if the dentist starts cleening out the tooth and some pain is felt due to the depth of the cavity then your dentist can still get you numb at this point. He or she is just looking out for you by sparing you the shot and  the discofort of anesthesia

  2. If the fillings are shallow, sometimes pain relief isn't needed. If you have reservations about pain, you should discuss them with the dentist.

  3. i have had 7 fillings at once (no more diet coke he said :\) anyhow its not that painful at all most of my fillings were so smallhe didnt use pain relief and personally i hate the needly it hurts the worse DX

  4. Its normal because there only surface cavities.
