Eight Belles.

You think she is going to run in the Derby or Oaks?

What one do you think she would should do?

Do you think she would do good in Derby?

I think they should run her in the Derby actually. I like her running style and she has proven she could run pretty well with the boys this year. Maybe not get a first but at least in the top 5 finishers.

Your thoughts?

  1. let her run in the oaks! pyro is to good...big brown will be the speed...she would be discouraged...

  2. I'll put it this way: She's got a lot better chance of winning than a good 15 other horses in the field. Run her in the Oaks and she'll win for sure, however. It's a tough call, but I'd like to see a filly in this Derby, if just to spice up the blandness a little.

I wonder, though, why she had trouble running in her early allowances, despite her recent dominating wins. I would like if someone could tell me if there was some kind of injury or something of that sort.

If she runs, and I bet, I'd put her in there somewhere.

  3. I really like Eight Belles.  She doesn't have a whole lot of experience and she's never really been strongly tested, but she's very consistently good.  She won the Honeybee in the same time as the Rebel the day before except that she was under a hand ride!  That shows she has the talent.  And she has been wide on the turns in her races so I know that she can handle a rougher trip and still come out on top.  She's had some really convincing wins against the other fillies so I think she needs to step up and face the boys.

If this were last year and we had a derby field with a Street Sense, Hard Spun, Curlin, Scat Daddy, Great Hunter, Circular Quay, Tiago... then I'd say she should avoid the Derby like the plague.  But our Derby field this year is a lot weaker than last year.  None of the horses are consistently spectacular so the race is open to anyone who is lucky enough to peak on Derby day.  Against this year's group of colts, I think Eight Belles will have a decent chance.  I know fillies don't tend to win the Triple Crown races, but I firmly believe that it is because no one tries to run their fillies in the Triple Crown.  Fillies are rarely entered so they never get the chance to win.  And did you watch the Lexington on ESPN today and see at the end when they showed the 2 fillies... did you see the size of Eight Belles?!  She's huge!

I hope Eight Belles goes in the Derby and right now it looks like she will.  Both she and Proud Spell might run in the Derby.  That's kinda rough for Larry Jones and since I really like both fillies, I kinda hope that Proud Spell stays in the Oaks and Eight Belles goes to the Derby so that they can each win a race!

  4. Eight Belles.

    Very good, consistent filly.

I bet they put her in the Derby. I would put her in the Oaks b/c like the Oaks would be almost like a guarantee. The Derby is a huge gamble. She also has not faced such a big field and has never faced boys. She could do good, she could do bad in the Derby. We'll just have to see.
