Filmmaker Sean Pamphilon maintains he did the right thing by releasing Gregg Williams audio tape - NFL News
Releasing the audio tape in which ex-New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams is heard telling his players to injure opponents, was a personal decision for filmmaker and blogger, Sean Pamphilon but his actions have had rather different consequences
to what he expected.
When he first released the recording on YouTube and his blog, Pamphilon expected that it would lead people to open a public debate on bounties.
However, that is not how things played out.
Steve Gleason the Saints former special team player for whom Pamphilon was shooting the documentary had in a statement said that the filmmaker had violated their terms of agreement by releasing the audio without his consent.
Gleason and Pamphilon were good friends but the release of the audio has created a big rift among the two and put the completion of the film in jeopardy.
The filmmaker has also received ridicule from people who believe that Pamphilon betrayed his friend when he released the tape.
Speaking to ESPN, Pamphilon said that he only did what he believed was right.
"Did anyone ever think somebody just wants to do the right thing?"
Adding further he said.
"Before this, people knew bounties existed, but nobody knew what a bounty actually sounded like. How disgusting it is.
"But what happened instead is most of that was swallowed up. The dialogue has shifted to 'Filmmaker betrays dying man.' And how do you defend yourself against a man who you love, when almost everyone says you betrayed him, and it's destroying your reputation?
I mean, I love this guy. I love this guy. . . .”
Gleason is suffering from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for which there is no cure and the former Saints player’s condition is deteriorating with each day.
The Saints bounty scandal shocked the football world after it became public that New Orleans’ defensive unit received payments for injuries.
The audio tape made it clear how the bounties worked with the Saints actively being asked to target their opponents’ injuries and concussions.
New Orleans have been fined heavily and received multiple suspensions by the National Football League (NFL).
Gregg Williams was suspended indefinitely from coaching but the release of the tape has taken away any chances of him returning to coach in the NFL.
