Question:

Films and documentaries about loyalists?

I've seen plenty of films about Irish republicans and nationalism, about the IRA and such .. and even some films about both sides (with a decidely nationalist slant).

I was wondering if there are any movies or documentaries that show the loyalist side? The viewpoint of the Protestants and what they deal with in Northern Ireland (and some of the fighting that goes on between the various Ulster loyalists groups).

Thanks

  1. Eh there are.....There are less because not many professionals wish to be associated with them, especially the English government after the UVF/British army collusion scandals http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miami_Showb... Etc.

  2. hi you

ask the 100s of kids from the age of 4 to 12 that were shouted for months because they were only going to school and the is miles of TV footage all around the world of it happening as i sit and look at your question i think for god sake cant some people stop and let the peace work and forget about who is right or wrong there is both and files on both points of view out there but to me peace is better than the last 30 to 40 years

  3. The TV film "Ormagh" is a balanced look at an event from a civilian/loyalist viewpoint. "The Last September" also looks at the loyalist side, but it is more of an upper class set-piece. There are likely others that have slipped my mind just now...

Simply put - If you want to see the film - then make the film. No one handed anything to the nationalist side, they wrote the plays and shot the films....film is at heart very egalitarian. But you have to do the work, no one just hands anyone a camera. Jim Sheridan, Neil Jordan, Terry George, Bernard MacLaverty...all worked their way up and created their opportunities. They told their stories.

If you want to see it, then write it.

  4. You're right, there should be. It would a good way to show the the whole story, as it were.

I don't know if you are familiar with the film The Most Fertile Man In Ireland, it kind of sent up the whole rivalry between the two communities but in a nice way, and showed that they had so much more in common than otherwise.
