I have only changed the filter in my furnace once in 2 years. I completely forgot about it until lately! Well when I took the old filter off, it was so dirty that dust came falling off of it! I dont think one more particle could have fit on it! Did this do damage to my furnace? I have a heat pump

  1. 24 months without changing your filter? The return portion of your coil is going to be extremely nasty.Get a mirror, a flashlight and have a peak at it.It will need to be cleaned due to freeze ups, health problems from breathing the mold, and compressor problems due to slugging the compressor with liquid refrigerant.Good luck.

  2. Doubtful you did damage to anything except your energy bills. Since the air could not flow properly, it restricted the warm air coming out to heat the home.

  3. When the furnace is operating, the filter should be changed every thirty days (some filters claim to be good for 90 days, but are most likely more expensive) for maximum efficiency.

  4. well, if you didnt change the filter for 2 years, then that means you havent had it checked or done a spring or winter service on it either.  you are throwing money away.  change the filter every month, its well worth the cost.  also, you should get a service guy out there to clean and check everything over.
