Why American hospitals are advised to use filter needles when they use injectors to get drug out of the glass ampule?

Is there potential dangers not using filter needle?

  1. When a glass ampule is opened, there is a potential for some glass to fall into the ampule.  The idea behind a filtered needle is that it would catch any glass so it wouldn't enter they syringe, and therefore, not be injected into the patient.   Not using a filter needle can introduce glass into the bloodstream.  I honestly have no idea what havoc the glass can wreak, but I am sure none of it would be good.


  2. The concern is the glass. Theoretically, the glass may lodge in the lung and by injuring the epithelium, triggering clotting mechanisms and lead to a clot.
