My husband says that I should buy filters for my camera that fits on the camera lens. But I want an extension telephoto lens. Should the filters go on the extension or before on the camera?

  1. Filters always go on the end of the lens furthest from the camera. So the light goes through the filter before the lens element. You always need either a UV haze or a skylight 1A filter on your lens. These do not greatly effect the picture. The main thing they do is protect the lens from damage. Better to scratch a 15 dollar filter than a 700 dollar lens. Other than that most folks have a polarizer in thier collection. For digital AF you want a circular polarizer. I like tyhe cokin system for effect filters but there are many good filters out there

  2. The filters go on the end of the lens.

UV or Clear is a common filter to have as they won't mess up your exposure and they will protect your lens.  Being careless one time I bashed my lens into a rock and cracked the filter real good.  However, that was a $40 filter and not the $600 lens.
