Question:

Fin rot / Fungus / White spot?

I have a main tank set up and the red honey gourami has developed fungus: cotton wool growths on body & fins. The fins also seem to be rotting away.

Rather than treat the whole tank (which includes other gouramis, tetras and corydoras), can I do a salt dip?

I also have a hospital tank set up at 30C with Protozin for a Betta with white spot. The white spot seems to have disappeared but I don't want to put the Betta back in to the main tank because he seems to be scared of the other fish (so I am also in the process of setting up a 2nd tank for him!).

  1. If your fish has fin rot or ich or white spot the others will already be infected also treat the whole tank with esha 2000, if there are still probs you can re-treat you do not have to do a water change before treating, also had this take the carbon filter out otherwise the treatment will be pointless.

  2. You should hospitalize the red honey gourami as well... and his fins will regenerate in time... salt dip is a good idea.

  3. no treat the whole tank as its a contagious funagl and it may have already been passed on to the other fish and also use melafx

  4. Salt dips would effectively cure the fungus, but they are also extremely stressful, and stress tends to exacerbate the infection.  Instead, I would move the Betta out of quarantine as soon as possible and move the Gourami and in and begin treating with Protozin as well.

EDIT: If you're unsure of whether or not you can quarantine him by Friday, remove any activated carbon from the main tank and begin treating that-- there is a possibility the other fish have the beginnings of a fungal infection, anyway.

EDIT 2: Protozin is mainly malachite green and formalin, as well acriflavine, I believe-- these are three drugs that are EXTREMELY effective against fungal infections, as well as parasites like Ich.  I am suggesting you use the Protozin instead of salt.
