Hello out there. I really need your help. My HB RTG came down with fin rot and fungus tail. I have been reading some questions and anwers from the forum. Now I notice that within the last week that Asten has finrot and fungus disease. But somehow, his face looks as if he lost alot of slime. His head and face looks like the phantom of the opera. My dats are the same way. Water is good except that the ph is aroung 6 to 6.5 due to drift wood. Could anyone help me out with this problems? I thank you ahead.

  1. AHH Don't use table salt.  That is DEADLY to fish.  It contains chemicals that harm the fish.  Use aquarium salt if you do give it a salt bath.

Sorry, I don't know how to answer the rest of your question, I just wanted to let the person who said use table salt know how bad it is for them.

  2. It is almost certainly a combination of fin rot (almost always bacterial, not fungal) and columnaris (another bacterial infection).  Salt will have little or no affect, as both are very tolerant of a raised salinity.  There is nothing wrong with using table salt in other cases, however-- the amount of iodine and anti-caking agents are so small that it will have no affect on the fish.  A much better treatment would be Triple Sulfa, Trisulfa, Furan 2, Maracyn 2, Maracyn TC, TC Capsules, Kanaplex, Terramycin, or similar gram negative effective would be much better choices.  Remove any activated carbon from the filter during treatment, and if using tetracycline, oxytetracycline, or minocycline based medications, keep the tank dark, as these drugs degrade with exposure to light.

  3. what are you talking about

  4. Have you tried a salt bath? It usually cures nearly anything! Get a medium sized container [ice cream tub will do], clean it thoroughly, add some table salt and water. Do not use boiled water because they don't have any oxygen. Use filtered water or [not my preference, but] tap water.

Leave your fish in there for around 10-20 minutes. It works swell because you can just see the fungus/grime come off your fish in the salt water. The moment you notice your fish acting abnormal [except for the moment you put him in] and is very stressed or looks dead or something, you better take him out and put him back in the tank.

Hope it helps. It works for my fish. (:
