Hello, I recenly got a pleco from the store. It is blackish grayish with brown blotches. Anyone know what kind it is? Okay, he has fin split and I am wondering if it matters? It is because I did a 25% water change and hit the heater and so at one point I think the degree was 84 or 86 and then it dropped to 76. This is the reason why I think. Will fin split matter? Will it regrow? I put in some stuff for fins that makes them grow back faster and helps them to like not catch diseases if they got hurt in the fins.

  1. if the fins are split it can be the first signs of fin rot. this normally occurs due to stress. (i.e. water condition or fluctuations in the water. it may heal naturally by the fishes own immune system but if it gets worse a fin rot treatment should be added and the water parameters shound be checked. ( p.h/ ammonia/ nitrite/nitrate) the split fin should grow back but if fin rot is left it will eat away at the fins and eventually get into the blood stream, this will poison the fish and it will die.  dont worry to much if its only a split fin just keep a cloose eye on it and be prepared to treat it if it gets any worse
