Final Fantasy Versus XIII probably Vapourware now – Video Games Update
There have been rumours that Square Enix has scrapped production of Final Fantasy Versus XIII but has made no official announcement so as to not affect the publisher’s own share price.
Final Fantasy Versus XIII (FFv13) was announced six years ago by Square Enix along with Final Fantasy XIII (FF13) at Sony’s Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference. Both games were touted as Playstation 3 exclusives with FF13 to be developed and released
first, followed by the release of FFv13.
It was later announced that development of an Xbox 360 version had also been started which caused the Playstation 3 version of the game to be delayed until the completion of the Xbox 360 version. FF13 was finally released in December 2009 for Japan and came
out in the West after three months in March 2010.
Playstation 3 fans were upset when they lost a promised exclusive title but were assured by Square Enix that Final Fantasy Versus 13 would remain exclusive to the Playstation3 and would utilise the full power of the console.
The game has been missing in action ever since and there have only been a few screen shots and trailers released for the game so far. The fact that Square Enix has brought out Final Fantasy XIII-2, an expansion of the first FF13 game and Final Fantasy XIV
(FF14), a Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO), after the release of FF13 in 2010 has shed no light on the progress of Versus XIII has been troubling gamers a lot.
FFv13 designer Tetsuya Nomura in an interview with Famitsu Magazine said, "We're almost done with preparing the latest info for the game. Because of a totally unrelated reason, there are circumstances in which that info cannot be released."
Today, Kotaku has reported that an anonymous source has informed them that the game was cancelled in the last few weeks but Square Enix has not made an official announcement so far. It is believed that Square Enix is holding back the official news and is
likely to affect Square Enix stock prices.
There have also been reports that Square Enix has shifted all the development assets towards the newly announced Final Fantasy XV (FF15) but how much of FFv13 will be included in the upcoming FF15 remains to be seen.
Square Enix has refused to comment on this leak which may be further proof that FFv13 is now nothing more than vapourware.
