  1. Remakes

    Yes

    Get FF4. It's really good

  2. They are 3D remakes of 3 and 4 (the EasyType version of 4 being the game that was originally released on the SNES in North America under the name Final Fantasy 2, because the actual 2 and 3 were not released here on the NES).

I can't really speak on 3, as I've not played it in any form. But I have played FF4 on SNES (EasyType), PS1 (HardType), and DS. FF4 has always been my favorite FF.

For the most part, the DS version is HardType, made slightly easier early on and slightly harder for the rest of it (and HardType FF4 was already one of, if not *the*, hardest FF game ever). They retranslated the game (but left in the famous goofy, though technically correct, line: "You spooney bard!") and added voice work for several of the key cutscenes (which also forced them to remove the ability to rename your characters, and turn the NPC who did the renaming for you into a running gag/sidequest). One town has a secret room where all the creatures in it are avatars for the creators of this DS version (which serves as a comedic interactive credit roll).

The only blatant gameplay change is the introduction of the Augment system. In FF4, each character has a set class with particular abilities, and who you have in your party is completely dictated by where you are in the main story, creating a very inflexible system. With the DS version though, there are some new abilities that you can find laying around or by talking to certain people that will let you assign a new ability to one character. Also, when a character leaves your party never to return, if you go to the correct location, you can get from 1-3 augments "from them", depending on how many augments you gave to them (I put the from them in quotes because you don't always go up to the lost character to get them, and sometimes some of the augments you get from them are abilities they did not have).

They also used the Augments for a few other things. In previous versions of FF4, stat gains were somewhat random after level 70 (and in some cases a base stat could decrease). Now they are based on what augments the character has. Also, there is a New Game+ feature that lets you carry over your Augments (though nothing else) which can be used twice on a particular save game. Because of how it's set up, if you want to max stats on that third playthrough, though, you have to use your augments very wisely from the very beginning of your first playthrough.
