Final four set at WTA Championships

The WTA Championship tournament being held in Doha, Qatar, which is in its final day of round robin play on 29 October, has narrowed down its playing field for the semi-finals.  Caroline Wozniacki, Kim Clijsters, Samantha Stosur, and Vera Zvonareva
have all advanced to the next round of play.

Caroline Wozniacki’s path
Denmark’s no. 1 ranked Caroline Wozniacki advanced to semi-final action by defeating Francesca Schiavone 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 and Elena Dementieva 6-1 and 6-1.  Even in her loss to Stosur, 6-4,
6-3, she still looked like she was in excellent form.  With her victory over Schiavone yesterday, Wozniacki has also secured for herself the no. 1 rank in the world for the season, making her the fourth youngest woman to achieve the feat.

Kim Clijsters’ path
The no. 3 ranked Belgian Kim Clijsters made it through the round robin group by coming out on the upper hand of a thrilling three set victory over Victoria Azarenka 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.  So
far, she has only played in two matches, the other against Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic, which she won in straight sets, to bring her record to 2-0.  She finished second in her round robin group though after losing to Zvonareva 6-4 7-5 on Friday, setting up a
match-up with  Stosur, who topped her group.

Samantha Stosur’s path
The Australian is the surprise of the tournament so far.  She finished 2-1 in the maroon group, turning a lot of heads in the process.  She faced off with Italian Francesca Schiavone in
her first match and won in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-4.  In her second match, she cemented her presence in the tournament by beating no. 1 Wozniacki in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-3.  Her last match against Russian Elena Dementieva went the distance, but Stosur
ended up losing 4-6, 6-4 and 7-6.  Definitely not an easy route to take to the semi’s but the Aussie has come to win and others should be taking note.

Vera Zvonareva’s path
The second-ranked Russian has also been quite impressive in her two victories so far in the tournament.  She looked very comfortable in her opening match winning in straight sets of Jankovic,
6-3 and 6-0.  Her second match came against Victoria Azarenka, an up and coming Belarusian who is making her second appearance in the Championships.  Zvonareva took care of business however, and won in straight sets

7-6 and 6-4.
The draw will be: Stosur vs Clijsters, and Zvonareva vs Wozniacki
