Final list of members of the ITTF Athletes Commission announced – Table tennis News
The final list of the members for the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Athletes Commission were finalised and announced at the Ahoy Arena Rotterdam, Netherlands, on May 12, 2011.
All the players who are featuring in the World Championship were eligible to compete and vote in the selection of the members.
ITTF have selected the members from active and retired players on the basis of gender, continent and also over the fact that the players must have featured in one World ITTF championship. A total of eleven members are selected for the committee. The sole
purpose of selecting the players was to give them a platform to represent the regions they belong too.
The selected candidates are William Henzell (Australia), Ashu Jain (United States Of America), Offiong Edem (Nigeria), Jose- Miguel Ramirez (Guatemala) and Wang Liqin from China. These five players are selected by ITTF officials.
They will join the five elected members for which the voting was done on May 9, during the GAC GROUP 2011 World Table Tennis Championships.
The five elected members are Vladimir Samsonov of Belarus, Korea’s Joo Se Hyuk, Belgium’s Jean-Michel Saive, Hungary’s Krisztina Toth and Spain’s Alfredo Carneros. They will be joined by a Para table tennis player, Alena Kanova from Slovakia to complete
the line-up. There were a total of seven members for which the voting was conducted.
The selection of Alena Kanova was made during the 2010 World Para Table Tennis Championships held at Korea.
The Electoral Committee for the voting and compilation of results featured Thomas Weikert (ITTF Executive Vice President), Jordi Serra (Executive Director Operations and Olympic Games) and Alison Burchell (Deputy Executive Director Operations). The committee
played a vital role in the selection procedures, which will certainly help the sport in future.
ITTF officials are hoping that these players will play an integral role in the development of table tennis throughout the world. They will also work along with the ITTF Hope Developmental programme in different areas of the world and would carry out different
training sessions for young players.
